Staying private — what to check before the camera goes on

Video chat with strangers is fine. Video chat with strangers while your post is visible on the desk behind you is a different thing. Most of the risk is boring and preventable.

Your background talks more than you do

Before the camera goes on, look at what is actually in frame. The usual leaks: post and parcels with your name and address, a window with a recognisable view, school or work uniforms, a laptop screen with your email open, framed photos of family.

The fix takes ten seconds. Turn to face a blank wall, or move the two or three items that identify you. You do not need a fancy setup — you need a boring one.

What never to hand over

Regardless of how the conversation is going:

  • Your full name, street, or workplace.
  • Any other account handle you use with real-life friends.
  • Photos of documents, cards, or anything with numbers on it.
  • Money sent off-platform, in any form, for any reason.

The pressure patterns worth recognising

Two show up often enough to name. The first is urgency — someone insisting you do something right now, before you have time to think. The second is escalation by small steps, where each request is only slightly past the last one, so no single moment feels like the point you should have said no.

Both are handled the same way: slow down or leave. Anyone with good intentions can survive you taking a minute.

If someone records or threatens you

Do not pay. Sextortion attempts almost always escalate after a payment rather than stopping, because paying proves the pressure works.

Stop replying, block, and keep whatever evidence you have — screenshots, usernames, timestamps. Report it on the platform, and report it to your local police or a national cybercrime line. This is a common crime and reporting it is routine, not embarrassing.

The boring habits that do most of the work

Cover the camera when you are not using it. Keep the chat on the platform rather than moving to a personal messenger. Assume anything on camera could be captured, and decide what you show on that basis.

None of this is about being suspicious of the person you are talking to. It is the same reasoning as locking your front door in a neighbourhood you like.
